Maya Ruins

  • Caracol
  • Largest Mayan site in Belize. At over 500m above sea level, it offers extraordinary views overlooking the Vaca Plateau, and breathtaking monuments and artifacts.

  • Xunantunich
  • Reached via hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan river, Xunantunich served as a civic ceremonial center. El Castillo is the second tallest structure in Belize (after the temple at Caracol). It is a bit of a hike and is definitely a tour for energetic people. Chances are, you’ll see some iguanas there!

  • Cahal Pech
  • Cahal Pech is about a mile away from the town of San Ignacio, above the banks of the Macal River. It is the oldest-known Maya site in the Belize river valley, and offers a fascinating example of pre-classic Maya architecture.
